In her Union Budget 2024-25 speech, Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs, Nirmala Sitharaman, highlighted several key initiatives and plans related to tourism and cultural development across India:
- General Tourism Promotion: Nirmala Sitharaman emphasized the integral role of tourism in India’s heritage and civilization. She underscored the government’s commitment to position India as a global tourist destination, citing the potential for job creation, increased investments, and economic growth across various sectors.
- Development of Spiritual and Religious Sites:
- Vishnupad Temple Corridor and Mahabodhi Temple Corridor: Drawing inspiration from the successful Kashi Vishwanath Temple Corridor project, the Minister announced comprehensive development plans for these corridors in Gaya and Bodh Gaya, Bihar. The aim is to transform them into world-class pilgrim and tourist destinations.
- Rajgir: Recognizing Rajgir’s significance for Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains, she highlighted the ancient Munisuvrata temple and the sacred Saptharishi hotsprings. The government plans a comprehensive development initiative for Rajgir.
- Nalanda: The Minister proposed developing Nalanda as a tourism hub and reviving Nalanda University to restore its historical prestige.
- Odisha’s Tourism Development: Acknowledging Odisha’s diverse attractions including scenic beauty, temples, monuments, wildlife sanctuaries, and beaches, the Minister announced government assistance for their development.
