Chandigarh Supercharges EV Ecosystem with New Incentives and Infrastructure Expansion

The 4th Review Meeting of the Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy of UT Chandigarh was held under the chairmanship of Rajeev Verma, Chief Secretary, UT Chandigarh. The meeting was attended by the Home Secretary, Finance Secretary, Secretary (Science, Technology & Renewable Energy), Secretary of Engineering, Secretary of Transport, and other senior officers of the Chandigarh Administration.
Discussions focused on accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles, strengthening the existing policy framework, and achieving the EV penetration target of 18% for the financial year 2025–26 in the Union Territory.
The following decisions were taken consequent upon proposals made by the UT Electric Vehicle Advisory Committee related to several key amendments to the EV Policy:
Enhanced Cap for Electric Four-Wheelers (Personal): The cap on the number of electric four-wheelers eligible for incentives under the policy may be increased from 2,000 to 3,500 units, in response to rising public interest.
Insurance Support for Electric Two-Wheelers: Buyers of electric two-wheelers may become eligible for insurance assistance of up to ₹5,000 for the first year, helping to reduce the upfront cost of ownership.
Increased Subsidy for Electric Two-Wheelers: The incentive for electric two-wheelers may be revised from ₹5,000/kWh to ₹10,000/kWh, subject to a maximum of ₹30,000 per vehicle.
Special Incentives for Women Buyers: To promote greater participation of women in EV adoption, women buyers of electric two-wheelers may be eligible for an enhanced subsidy of ₹12,500/kWh, capped at ₹37,500 per vehicle.
Boost for Electric Bicycles: To encourage non-motorized, sustainable mobility, the incentive for electric bicycles may be increased from 25% of the cost (up to ₹4,000) to 25% of the cost, up to ₹6,000.
Expansion of EV Charging Infrastructure: The Committee resolved to expand the EV charging station network across all areas of Chandigarh, ensuring comprehensive coverage across the UT.
In line with Chandigarh’s clean energy vision, the Administration also emphasized the development of Renewable Energy-based Charging Hubs to support eco-friendly mobility solutions.
These proposed measures reaffirm the Chandigarh Administration’s commitment to transforming the city into a model EV ecosystem, fostering clean, green, and inclusive transportation for all.
