Centre Pulls Up Chandigarh Administration: Urgent Action Sought on Key Land & Housing Issues by Aug 5

The Voice of Chandigarh – In a significant development, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has directed the UT Chandigarh Administration to urgently furnish details on long-pending land and housing matters that have been under dispute for years.

The directive, issued from the UT Division of the Ministry and addressed to the Chief Secretary, Chandigarh, emphasizes that despite repeated reminders, the requisite information has not yet been received. The MHA has set a deadline of August 2025, for the Chandigarh Administration to submit its response.

🔑 Major Issues Flagged by the Centre:

  1. Ban on Share-Wise Sale of Property – Clarification sought on the implementation of the Supreme Court’s ruling and its interpretation by the Chandigarh Administration.

  2. Ownership Rights for Residents – Thousands living in resettlement colonies across Chandigarh still await clarity on their property ownership status.

  3. Extension of Lal Dora – Finalization pending for 22 villages brought under the Municipal Corporation’s jurisdiction.

  4. Relocation of Housing Board Families – Urgent provision of dwelling units for families residing in Chandigarh Housing Board accommodations.

  5. Decade-Long Pending Housing Disputes – Group Housing Societies and Co-operative Housing Societies facing unresolved housing allotment and regularization issues.

The Ministry has stressed that the matter must be treated as “urgent”, warning the UT Administration against further delay. The reminder follows a letter dated 22 July 2025 and a representation received from Manish Tewari, Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha), highlighting the gravity of these issues.

With thousands of residents awaiting relief, the Centre’s ultimatum could bring long-overdue clarity on property rights, housing allotments, and the fate of Chandigarh’s resettlement colonies.
