PGIMER Hosts First Basic Orthopaedic Trauma Course, Empowering Young Surgeons with Skills and Knowledge

The Voice of Chandigarh

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, PGIMER Chandigarh, successfully organized the First Basic Orthopaedic Trauma Course, a comprehensive academic initiative designed to strengthen the foundations of young surgeons in fracture management and trauma care.

The course combined didactic lectures, interactive sessions, and hands-on workshops, offering participants an in-depth understanding of modern principles in orthopaedic trauma surgery. Delegates were trained in the science and art of internal fixation, with a special focus on biomechanics, stability, biological fixation, and the importance of preserving soft tissues in fracture care.

A major highlight was the practical workshop on plating techniques, where participants engaged directly with implants and fixation methods under the close supervision of senior faculty. With nearly one faculty member for every two to three residents, the program fostered a unique environment for personalized mentorship—allowing participants to clarify doubts and refine their surgical skills with confidence.

The sessions also addressed the real-world challenges faced by young surgeons in emergency and operating theatre settings. Faculty members emphasized practical approaches and shared valuable insights from their clinical experience, ensuring that the teachings had direct day-to-day relevance for trauma care practice.

More than 50 delegates and 20 faculty members from across the country participated, creating a vibrant exchange of knowledge between experienced trauma experts and budding orthopaedic surgeons. The event reflected the spirit of collaborative learning, where experience met enthusiasm, and wisdom blended with curiosity.

The course concluded with heartfelt thanks to the Director of PGIMER for his encouragement and continuous support in promoting in-house academic initiatives aimed at improving patient care. The organizers also acknowledged the contribution of guest faculty and PGI’s Orthopaedics Department faculty for dedicating their valuable time to mentor the next generation of surgeons.

With this landmark event, PGIMER reaffirmed its mission of empowering young orthopaedic surgeons with knowledge, skill, and confidence—raising the standards of trauma care across India.
