Month-long Global IDD Prevention Campaign Concludes in Chandigarh with a Call for Collective Action

The month-long observance of Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDDs) Prevention Day concluded in Chandigarh, spreading the message to “introspect, sensitize, and take individual responsibility towards eliminating Iodine Deficiency Disorders.”
Dr. Suman Singh, Director Health Services-cum-MD NHM, UT Chandigarh, graced the valedictory event as the Chief Guest, while Dr. Ranjana Mehta, Programme Officer (NIDDCP), presented an overview of the activities conducted and key achievements under the programme.
Addressing Programme Officers, Medical Officers, Health Teachers, Peer Educators, and students from government schools, Dr. Suman Singh stressed the crucial role of using adequately iodized salt and raising community awareness to prevent IDDs.
Throughout the observance month, the IDD Cell, UT Chandigarh, organized a series of impactful initiatives, including:
- Health talks in Gynaecology and Paediatrics OPDs at GMSH-16
- Urine iodine testing among pregnant women
- Salt testing demonstrations at Ayushman Arogya Mandirs
- Awareness lectures, skits, and competitions in government schools
- Salt and urine sample testing at the State IDD Laboratory
The event began with a soulful Saraswati Vandana by students of GMSSS-33, followed by an awareness skit performed by GMSSS-23 students, creatively depicting the consequences of iodine deficiency.
Winners and participants of various competitions were felicitated with prizes and certificates.
The Health Department, UT Chandigarh, reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring universal use of adequately iodized salt and continuing awareness efforts to achieve the goal of eliminating Iodine Deficiency Disorders.
