A powerful explosion near the Lal Qila (Red Fort) Metro Station shook the heart of the national capital on Sunday evening, leaving at least 13 people dead and over 20 injured, according to early reports from Delhi Police and emergency services.
The blast occurred around 7:00 PM near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station, just meters from the iconic Mughal-era monument. Eyewitnesses reported a loud explosion from a parked Hyundai i20 car, followed by flames engulfing nearby vehicles and panic spreading through the crowded area.
🔎 Initial Findings
The Delhi Police Special Cell and National Security Guard (NSG) teams rushed to the scene, sealing off the entire Red Fort and Chandni Chowk area. Forensic experts recovered fragments believed to be part of an improvised explosive device (IED). The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) has been invoked, indicating a potential terror-related investigation.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level emergency meeting , attended by senior intelligence and Delhi Police officials. Authorities have imposed strict security curbs across central and north Delhi, temporarily closing the Red Fort for visitors for three days and suspending operations at Lal Qila and Chandni Chowk Metro Stations.
Traffic diversions have been implemented across major city routes, including Ring Road, Jama Masjid, and ISBT Kashmere Gate.
🧩 Investigation So Far
Police sources confirm that the vehicle involved was registered in Haryana, and its owner has been detained for questioning. Authorities are verifying whether the blast was triggered remotely or by an explosive device hidden inside the car.
The Delhi Police Commissioner stated,
“We are treating this as a high-priority case. All angles, including terror involvement, are being examined.”

At least 13 casualties have been confirmed, with several critically injured victims admitted to Lok Nayak Hospital and AIIMS Trauma Centre. Emergency teams and firefighters worked through the night to control the blaze and clear the area.
