Chandigarh Mayoral Polls 2026: DC Reviews Arrangements, SOP Finalised for Transparent Show-of-Hands Election

The Deputy Commissioner, U.T. Chandigarh, who is also the Prescribed Authority for the Mayoral Election scheduled on 29 January 2026, reviewed election preparedness at the Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh. A detailed meeting was held with senior MC officials to assess administrative, procedural, logistical and security arrangements.

It was confirmed that the elections for Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be conducted through “Show of Hands” as per the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act, 1976 and relevant regulations. A comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) has been finalised to ensure transparency, detailing voting order, hand-raise procedure, counting, verification, documentation and declaration of results.

The entire election process will be videographed continuously and preserved for at least 90 days, with media coverage and live feed allowed as per rules. Dr. Ramneek Singh Bedi, Councillor and non-candidate, has been appointed Presiding Authority for the election meeting.

Strict security and access norms will be enforced, with only authorised persons allowed inside the MC premises and no supporters permitted. Chandigarh Police will ensure law and order. The DC directed strict adherence to nomination timelines and procedures, reaffirming the Administration’s commitment to a free, fair, peaceful and transparent mayoral election.
