The Voice of Chandigarh

A press conference was organized by the Bharatiya Janata Party, Chandigarh Pradesh, at the Kamalam Party Office in the Presence of State President Jatinder Pal Malhotra. On this occasion, Chandigarh Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla presented in detail the works, reforms, and achievements accomplished during her one-year tenure in the Municipal Corporation before the media.

Along with State President Jatinder Pal Malhotra, Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla, State General Secretary Ramveer Bhatti, Sanjeev Rana, and State Media In-charge Ravi Rawat were specially present at the press conference.

In her address, Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla stated that when she assumed office on 30 January 2025, the financial condition of the Municipal Corporation was extremely poor, and there were even difficulties in disbursing salaries to employees. She transformed this challenge into an opportunity by establishing coordination with the administration, Municipal Corporation officials, and the BJP organization, and by taking firm and decisive steps.

To ensure transparency and efficiency in the Municipal Corporation, the Finance & Contract Committee (F&CC) was constituted unanimously. In February 2025, three statutory committees—the Roads Committee, Water Supply & Sewerage Committee, and House Tax Committee—were reconstituted. In addition, for the first time, nine sub-committees were formed, including Sanitation, Enforcement, Fire & Emergency Services, Environment & Beautification, Women Empowerment, Electricity, Village–Colony–Slum Development, Day Market & Apni Mandi, and Art–Culture–Sports Committees. Notably, these important committees were not constituted in the years 2022, 2023, and 2024.

In the area of revenue generation, for the first time in the history of the Municipal Corporation, the 53rd Rose Festival 2025 was organized at zero expenditure, generating an income of ₹11,57,220. Similarly, the 38th Flower Theme Show 2025 was successfully organized with zero expenditure and zero waste.

Under the advertisement policy, revenue of approximately ₹20 crore is expected from 16 unipoles and 59 hoardings, ₹32 crore from advertisements in toilet blocks, and around ₹2 crore from 36 roundabouts.

Providing relief to traders, 1,041 wards were allowed to deposit pending license fees in three installments. So far, ₹2.50 crore has been received, and an additional income of ₹6 crore is expected by March 2026.

The Mayor informed that, considering the financial condition of the Municipal Corporation, a request was made to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, following which the Ministry of Home Affairs approved a grant of ₹125 crore. With the guidance of Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, this assistance has strengthened essential services and infrastructure in the city.

In most areas of the city, rusted water supply and sewerage pipelines have already been replaced, and the remaining work will be completed soon at a cost of ₹25 crore. Out of the ₹40 crore V-4, V-5, and V-6 road projects, work worth ₹20 crore has been completed. The V-3 road works are being undertaken by the Chandigarh Administration, resulting in savings of approximately ₹45 crore for the Municipal Corporation.

In the field of sanitation and environment, 95 percent of the waste from the Dadumajra dumping ground has been removed. An MoU has been signed for a Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant for the disposal of organic waste, and the land identification ceremony was completed on 19 January 2026. Additionally, the MoU related to door-to-door garbage collection, pending for the last six years, has been finalized. Payment of ₹3 crore for sanitation workers’ material, pending for the last 32 months, has also been ensured.

Under civic amenities, the monthly parking pass scheme is expected to generate ₹50 crore annually. Eighty percent of the treated water project has been completed and will be finalized by January 2026. In 2026, six community centers will be dedicated to the public. Moreover, more than 500 blood donation camps, cancer screening programs, and mega health camps were organized, and ₹20 lakh was deposited in the flood relief fund.

To promote a drug-free and clean Chandigarh, widespread public awareness was created through initiatives such as Swachhta Mahotsav, Swachhta Hi Seva campaign, Cyclothon, Swachh Cultural Festival, Gali Cricket Tournament 2025 “Balla Ghumao, Nasha Bhagao,” and “Walk for Drug-Free Chandigarh.”

Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla expressed confidence that with transparent governance, financial discipline, and the support of BJP leadership and the public, this journey towards making Chandigarh a clean, empowered, and self-reliant city will continue to move forward.
