National Lok Adalat in Chandigarh Disposes of 45,946 Cases, Facilitates Settlements Worth ₹86+ Crore Under the Aegis of National Legal Services Authority

Under the aegis of National Legal Services Authority and able guidance of the Justice Vikram Nath, Executive Chairman, National Legal Servcies Authority, Judge Supreme Court of India, New Delhi, Justice Sheel Nagu, the Chief Justice-cum-Patron-in-Chief, State Legal Services Authority, U.T. Chandigarh and H.S.Grewal, Learned District and Sessions Judge-cum-Chairman, District Legal Services Authority, U.T., Chandigarh, the National Lok Adalat was organized in District Court Complex, Sector-43, Chandigarh by State Legal Services Authority, U.T., Chandigarh and District Legal Services Authority, U.T., Chandigarh.

Thirteen (13) benches headed by the serving Judicial Officers were constituted in the District Courts, Sector-43, Chandigarh. Criminal Compoundable cases, cases under Section 138 of N.I.Act, Bank Recovery cases, MACT Cases, Matrimonial Disputes, Labour Disputes, Arbitration matters, other Civil Cases, Municipal Matters and Traffic Challans were taken up and disposed off with the consent of the parties.

In today’s National Lok Adalat more than 45946 cases were disposed of by the benches of serving Judicial Officers constituted in New District Courts Complex, Sector 43, Chandigarh which include pending, pre-litigative cases and traffic challans. In abovesaid cases, total amount of Rs. 27,22,25,076/- is settled.

In addition to above, 89 pre-litigative cases involving amount of Rs.1,90,000/- were disposed of by the Permanent Lok Adalat (PUS), 7 Labour Dispute Cases involving amount of Rs.1,00,000/- were disposed of by the Labour Court, 53 were disposed of by State & District Consumer Commissions, Chandigarh involving amount of Rs.1,44,93,446/-, 192 cases were disposed of by DRT-II, Chandigarh involving amount of Rs. 57,83,44,707/- and total 183 mutations have been disposed of by Tehsildar (Revenue), U.T., Chandigarh.
A Key highlight of the event was the special visit by Learned District & Sessions Judge-cum- Chairman, District Legal Services Authority, U.T., Chandigarh, who oversaw the entire process. Learned District & Sessions Judge-cum-Chairman, Distirct Legal Services Authority, U.T., Chandigarh said that “efforts should be made from both sides in matrimonial dispute and parents of the husband and wife should not interfere in the decisions of them”. He further said that “TALI EK HATH SE NAHI BAJTI DONO HATHO SE BAJTI HAI”. Learned District & Sessions Judge-cum-Chairman, Distirct Legal Services Authority, U.T., Chandigarh lauded the collaborative efforts of the Judicial Officers, Advocates and Administrative staff, emphasizing the critical role of Lok Adalats in promoting alternative disputes resolution.

In a matrimonial dispute, husband and wife were present alongwith their parents. Learned District & Sessions Judge-cum-Chairman, Distirct Legal Services Authority, U.T., Chandigarh interacted with them and said that opportunity should be given to each other to re-start life. Dissolution of the marriage should be the last resort. This case was fixed before the bench of Puneet Mohan Sharma, Additional District & Sessions Judge, Chandigarh.

In other matrimonial dispute which was fixed before the bench of Rahul Garg, Civil Judge, (Sr. Divn), Chandigarh in which, with the effort of Learned District & Sessions Judge-cum-Chairman, Distirct Legal Services Authority, U.T., Chandigarh, parties compromised the matter and husband agreed to pay Rs.3,000/- per month as maintenance to the wife and both the parties promised not to make any adverse remarks against each other.

Further, in the Court of Ajay, Civil Judge (Jr. Divn), Chandigarh, in a matrimonial dispute between husband and wife, parties agreed to withdraw all the cases against each other and compromised the matter in a sum of Rs.17 Lakhs.

More than 23 cases have been disposed of which are 5 years old cases, which is the great achievement.

The National Lok Adalat was conducted under the able guidance of  H. S. Grewal, Learned District & Sessions Judge-cum-Chairman, Distirct Legal Services Authority, U.T., Chandigarh Originating from Gandhian Principles, Lok Adalat has become a major helping hand to courts and has largely succeeded in providing a supplementary forum to litigants for determination and settlement of disputes, Arun Kumar Aggarwal, Learned Member Secretary, State Legal Services Authority, U.T., Chandigarh and Sunil Kumar, Secretary, District Legal Service Authority, Chandigarh thanked for making this Lok Adalat a success and further appealed to resolve their disputes through the Lok Adalats as it provides quick and economical justice.
