In response to emerging global energy supply challenges, the Government of India has initiated a series of measures to increase the availability of kerosene oil across the country, marking a temporary return of the fuel as an alternative for household use.

According to recent developments, regulatory norms governing the storage and distribution of kerosene have been relaxed to ensure quicker and wider reach, particularly in rural and economically weaker regions. The move comes amid concerns over potential disruptions in LPG supplies due to ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting global fuel trade routes.

Officials indicate that kerosene is being repositioned as a backup fuel for cooking and lighting in several states and Union Territories. Additional allocations have already been made, with priority being given to ration card holders and households dependent on subsidized fuel under the public distribution system.

In states like Maharashtra, emergency quotas have been released for district-level distribution, while select petrol pumps have received temporary permission to store and supply kerosene to improve accessibility.

Energy experts note that while kerosene had largely been phased out in urban India due to the widespread adoption of LPG, current supply uncertainties have necessitated its limited revival. However, authorities have assured that this is a short-term measure aimed at stabilizing domestic energy availability.

Meanwhile, rising demand has led to localized price fluctuations, with reports of informal market activity surfacing in some regions. The government is expected to monitor the situation closely to prevent hoarding and ensure fair distribution.
