The Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA) raised serious concerns over the deteriorating financial health of the country’s aviation sector, warning that airlines may be forced to scale down operations if urgent government intervention is not undertaken.

In its communication to the Centre, the FIA highlighted that domestic carriers are facing unprecedented financial stress, primarily driven by a steep rise in Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices. The body cautioned that the situation has reached a critical stage, with several routes becoming economically unviable.

The FIA, which represents major airlines such as IndiGo, Air India and SpiceJet, pointed out that fuel costs now account for nearly 55–60% of total operating expenses, significantly higher than earlier levels. This sharp increase, coupled with global geopolitical tensions and currency fluctuations, has further aggravated the financial burden on airlines.

According to the industry body, the combined impact of rising crude oil prices, restricted airspace in certain regions, and a weakening rupee has created a challenging operating environment. Airlines have indicated that continuing operations on several domestic and international routes is becoming increasingly difficult under current conditions.

The FIA has urged the government to take immediate corrective measures, including rationalisation of ATF prices and policy support to stabilise the sector. Without timely intervention, the body warned, airlines may have no option but to reduce flight operations or adjust capacity, potentially affecting connectivity and passenger travel plans.

The development signals growing pressure within the aviation industry and raises concerns about possible fare hikes and service disruptions in the near future.
