Watermelon Scare Sparks Action: Chandigarh Cracks Down, Finds No Adulteration So Far
The Voice of Chandigarh
In view of recent media reports regarding an alleged death in Mumbai linked to watermelon consumption, the Food Safety Administration, Health Department, U.T. Chandigarh has taken prompt preventive action. Food Safety Officers were directed to lift watermelon samples from markets across the city. The samples have been sent to FSSAI-notified, NABL-accredited laboratories for detailed analysis. Mobile Food Testing Laboratories have been stationed in various sectors to conduct on-the-spot quality checks of watermelons. As per preliminary reports from Mobile Food Testing Units, no adulteration with artificial colors or added sugar has been detected in the samples tested so far. The Department is awaiting detailed analysis reports from the accredited laboratories.

To prevent food-borne illnesses, the general public is advised to:
- Avoid eating cut or peeled fruits sold in the open at roadside stalls and rehri markets.
- Do not purchase fruits that are overripe, bruised, damaged, or have an unusual smell or appearance.
- Wash all fruits thoroughly with clean potable water before consumption, even if they are to be peeled.
- Do not store cut fruits for long hours, especially during hot weather. Consume them immediately.
- Buy fruits only from clean, licensed vendors who maintain proper hygiene and storage.
Citizens are requested to remain vigilant and report any unhygienic practices or suspected food adulteration through the “Food Safety Connect” mobile app, available on Google Play Store and Apple App Store, or via the FSSAI web portal.
