The Voice of Chandigarh | Travel Trade Reporter

Panic gripped passengers aboard an IndiGo flight after a power bank reportedly exploded and caught fire shortly after landing at Chandigarh Airport, triggering an emergency evacuation.

According to initial reports, the incident occurred on a Hyderabad–Chandigarh flight when smoke began spreading inside the cabin, creating alarm among passengers and crew. The situation was quickly handled by the cabin crew, who activated emergency protocols.

Authorities confirmed that an immediate evacuation was carried out using emergency slides, ensuring the safe exit of all passengers and crew members onboard. Around 190+ passengers were safely evacuated.

While most passengers escaped unharmed, minor injuries were reported during the evacuation process, with at least one passenger reportedly suffering a leg injury. Medical assistance was promptly provided at the airport.

Officials clarified that the incident was not related to any terror activity, but was caused by a malfunction in a lithium-ion battery (power bank)—a known safety risk in aviation if damaged or overheated.

An investigation has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the incident. Meanwhile, aviation authorities have reiterated safety guidelines regarding the carriage and handling of electronic devices and power banks during flights.
