Indian cricket stalwart Ajinkya Rahane has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing the curtains down on a remarkable career that spanned nearly 15 years. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) paid glowing tribute to one of the country’s finest Test batters, hailing his resilience, humility and match-winning performances in some of the toughest overseas conditions.
Rahane, widely regarded as one of India’s most dependable middle-order batters, played a pivotal role in establishing India as a dominant force in Test cricket. His elegant stroke play, sound technique and calm temperament made him a reliable performer, especially on foreign soil. His memorable centuries at Lord’s, Wellington, Melbourne, Kingston and Durban remain among the finest overseas knocks by an Indian batter.
The defining moment of Rahane’s career came during the historic 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. Taking over the captaincy after India’s crushing defeat in Adelaide, Rahane inspired a depleted Indian side with a magnificent century at the Melbourne Cricket Ground before leading the team to one of the greatest series victories in cricket history.
Under his composed leadership, India overcame injuries, inexperience and the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic to defeat Australia 2-1, culminating in the unforgettable triumph at The Gabba, where Australia’s 32-year unbeaten record came to an end. Rahane captained India in six Test matches, remaining unbeaten with four wins and two draws.

“You played cricket with utmost sincerity and integrity. Through important innings, thoughtful leadership and the example you set for younger players, you made every team you represented stronger. Indian cricket will always remain grateful for your outstanding service,” Saikia said.
