Reservation of Wards Determined for General Election to Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh

The General Election to all 35 wards of the Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh, is required to be held before the expiry of the term of the present House on January 7, 2027.

In this regard, the State Election Commissioner, U.T. Chandigarh, in exercise of the powers conferred upon him under the relevant law and in accordance with the procedure prescribed by the Chandigarh Administration, determined the wards to be reserved for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes, women belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Women (General) for the ensuing General Election to the Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh.

The reservation proceedings were conducted during a meeting held at the U.T. State Guest House, Sector 6, Chandigarh, in the presence of representatives of recognised national political parties, members of the general public and officers of the Chandigarh Administration.

The proceedings were presided over by the State Election Commissioner, U.T. Chandigarh, Dr. Vijay Dev, in the presence of Harpreet Singh Sudan, Special Commissioner, Municipal Corporation; Amandeep Singh Bhatti, ADC; Isha Kamboj, Joint Secretary, Local Government; and representatives of various political parties.

The wards reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates were determined in descending order based on the highest percentage of Scheduled Caste population in each ward, as per the published Census 2011 data. The seven wards reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates during the General Election to the Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh, held in December 2021 were excluded from the exercise.

Of the seven wards reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates, three wards were reserved for women belonging to the Scheduled Castes through a draw of lots. Similarly, nine wards were reserved for Women (General) through a draw of lots after excluding the wards reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates for the 2026 election and those reserved for Women (General) during the 2021 Municipal Corporation election.

As determined under the prescribed procedure, Ward Nos. 1, 3, 4, 9, 15, 29 and 32 have been reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates. These include Ward Nos. 3, 29 and 32, which have been reserved for women belonging to the Scheduled Castes.

Ward Nos. 2, 8, 11, 13, 17, 21, 25, 26 and 30 have been reserved for Women (General).

The remaining 19 wards—Ward Nos. 5, 6, 7, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 19, 20, 22, 23, 24, 27, 28, 31, 33, 34 and 35—have been declared General wards.
