Adviser inaugurates new facilities at GMCH, Chandigarh
GMCH Celebrates its 30th ANNUAL DAY

To commemorate 30 glorious years of Government Medical College & Hospital, Chandigarh, Dharam Pal, Adviser to the Administrator, UT, Chandigarh was the Chief Guest on the Annual Day function of this institute. The Chief Guest during his address congratulated the faculty and staff for valuable contribution in providing quality healthcare facilities and very well managing the COVID-19 pandemic not just for the citizen of Chandigarh but also to people from surrounding states. Besides, he drew attention towards the pressing healthcare requirements including shortage of doctors, the need to curb the growing menace of non-communicable diseases, adoption of hygiene and sanitary practices. He also emphasized the importance of research especially pertaining to local issues. This was followed by the grand cultural programme, which involved the active participation of the students. The key highlights of the event were classical dance performances spanning across different states representing the diversity and composite culture of the country and a skit.
On the occasion, Dharam Pal, IAS, Adviser to the Administrator inaugurated various facilities added in GMCH, Chandigarh, which includes VRDL Lab, Skill Lab, Respiratory ICU and Pulmonary Medicine OPD in the hospital building. The construction and renovation work of these areas has already been completed. To provide comprehensive treatment to serious lungs and respiratory patients, a separate Respiratory Intensive Care Unit has been established at Level-V, Block-A. A new Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) has also been established in the Deptt. of Microbiology, Level-I, Block-E. Till now, the RtPCR tests were done in the old laboratory. The Pulmonary Medicine OPD has been renovated to provide an infection-free atmosphere to the patients and medicos. To meet the National Medical Council requirement, a new Skill Lab has been established in Block-J. The UG and PG students will enrich their skills with this facility.
While addressing the audience, Prof Jasbinder Kaur, Director-Principal GMCH highlighted the achievements of GMCH in the last year. She shared that GMCH today stands at 8th Rank among all the Govt Medical Colleges of the country. The present bed strength of GMCH is 980 beds which include 122 beds of South Campus Sector 48. The construction work of the 200 bedded Emergency-cum-Trauma block has already been started and is in progress. It will improve emergency services tremendously. Approx 300 bedded Mother and Child Care Centre has been added to the priority list of 100 days and drawings are being finalized. With both the facilities added, the bed strength of GMCH will increase to approx. 1500. The construction of hostels for MBBS boys and girls has also been put on the priority list because of the requirement of NMC. In addition to the existing PSA Oxygen Generation Plants, another plant of 800 LPM capacity is being installed in GMCH Sector 32.
