Air India gears up for fog season
The Voice of Chandigarh News | Travel Trade Reporter
Every year during the winter season, the northern part of India experiences heavy fog and poor visibility leading to disruptions in air traffic. The impact is felt in Delhi – Air India’s primary hub and the heart of India’s aviation network –, and some other large cities in the region, causing inconvenience to our air travellers due to its impact on flight schedules across the nation.
However, despite taking precautionary measures, the unpredictability and unavoidable capacity reduction at affected airports is a fact of winter life and at Air India we will do all that is possible to mitigate disruption when it happens. The following are some steps being taken in addition to complying with regulatory guidance.
- Air India has adjusted flight schedules to minimise disruptions to long-haul and metro-to-metro flights with onward connectivity during the fog window.
- Air India is also strengthening its processes and will deploy additional manpower at the airports, including those where flights are likely to be diverted, to reduce customer inconvenience in the event of a delay or diversion.
- Air India has increased the number of CAT-3 trained pilots who are certified to land in low visibility operations (LVO), using the CAT-3 Instrument Landing System (ILS).
- Most importantly, as part of its ‘Fog Care’ initiative*, Air India will proactively reach out to passengers, flying to and from Delhi, informing them about potential delays or cancellation of their flights offering them complimentary rescheduling of their booking or refunds.
