Ajay Singhal Assumes Office as Director General of Police, Haryana

The Voice of Chandigarh
Ajay Singhal, IPS, has formally assumed charge as the Director General of Police (DGP), Haryana, at the Police Headquarters, Panchkula. On the occasion, senior officers of the police department extended a formal welcome, while a ceremonial guard of honour was presented by police personnel. The proceedings were marked by strict protocol and institutional decorum.

Mr. Singhal was appointed to the post of Director General of Police on December 31, 2025, on the eve of the New Year. His appointment was effected pursuant to the recommendations of a selection panel constituted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The panel had shortlisted three senior Indian Police Service officers for consideration, from which Mr. Singhal, a 1992-batch IPS officer, was selected and approved by the competent authority.

Although Mr. Shatrujeet Kapur, former DGP, stood senior-most in the panel on the basis of length of service, he was not accorded the benefit of seniority. His name had surfaced in connection with the suicide case of late IPS officer Mr. Y. Pooran Kumar, following which the State Government placed him on leave and subsequently removed him from the post of DGP. Thereafter, Mr. O.P. Singh was entrusted with the charge of Acting Director General of Police; however, he demitted office upon attaining the age of superannuation on December 31, 2025.

The third officer empanelled was Mr. Alok Mittal, IPS (1993 batch), whose date of superannuation is June 30, 2029. However, Mr. Singhal was preferred in view of his seniority, extensive administrative experience, and meritorious service record.

As Director General of Police, Mr. Ajay Singhal is entrusted with the onerous responsibility of maintaining and further strengthening the law and order apparatus of the State, advancing police modernization initiatives, and enhancing institutional credibility and public confidence in policing. His appointment is widely perceived as a measure aimed at ensuring administrative continuity, stability, and operational efficiency within the Haryana Police.
