Bikram Singh Majithia Remanded to Judicial Custody for 14 Days in Connection with Disproportionate Assets Allegations; Tensions Escalate Outside Mohali Court

The Voice of Chandigarh News:

In a significant development pertaining to the ongoing investigation into allegations of possessing assets disproportionate to known sources of income, Bikram Singh Majithia, a functionary of the Shiromani Akali Dal and former cabinet minister, was produced before the Learned Magistrate at Mohali upon the culmination of his four-day custodial remand granted earlier to the Punjab Vigilance Bureau.

After due consideration of the submissions made by both the prosecution and the defence, the Court was pleased to remand the accused to judicial custody for a further period of fourteen days. Consequently, Majithia shall be lodged at Central Jail, Nabha, pursuant to the judicial directions issued by the Duty Magistrate.

It is pertinent to note that the accused had remained in Vigilance custody since 26 June 2025, in connection with the instant matter under investigation.

Prior to the court proceedings, a substantial assembly of Shiromani Akali Dal office-bearers and party cadres congregated in the vicinity of the court premises. In anticipation of public disorder, stringent security measures had been instituted by the local law enforcement authorities. Despite these precautions, a physical altercation ensued between the police personnel and several party workers, necessitating immediate intervention.

Subsequently, numerous individuals were taken into preventive custody and escorted from the location in official vehicles. Additionally, several political affiliates had been placed under house arrest or detained preemptively to maintain public order and safeguard the judicial process from disruption.

This matter continues to unfold as the investigating agency is expected to submit further evidence and file requisite applications in the coming days.
