BJP Tightens Grip on Chandigarh Civic Power, Saurabh Joshi Elected Mayor with Clear Majority

The Voice of Chandigarh

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has once again asserted its dominance in Chandigarh’s civic politics by winning the Mayor’s election, with Saurabh Joshi elected as the new Mayor of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. Securing 18 votes, the BJP candidate emerged decisively ahead of rivals, underlining the party’s organisational strength and unity within the House.

The election witnessed no cross-voting, reflecting strict party discipline across political lines. Saurabh Joshi received the complete support of BJP councillors, while Aam Aadmi Party candidate Yogesh Dhingra secured all 11 votes from AAP councillors. Congress nominee Gurpreet Singh Gabi received the backing of Congress councillors along with one vote from party MP Manish Tewari, taking his total to 7 votes.

With a clear numerical edge, the BJP’s victory left no room for ambiguity, firmly tilting the balance of power in its favour. Saurabh Joshi will serve as the 32nd Mayor of Chandigarh, marking another chapter in the BJP’s expanding influence in the Union Territory’s municipal governance.

Soon after the results were declared, the BJP camp erupted in celebrations, with party leaders hailing the mandate as a vote of confidence in the party’s vision for Chandigarh’s development and administration.
