Chandigarh MC Bans Lawn Watering, Vehicle Washing During Morning Supply; ₹5,788 Fine & Disconnection for Violations

In view of the rising demand for drinking water during the summer season, the Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh has issued a public notice imposing strict restrictions on the use of potable water during morning supply hours. The restrictions will remain in force from April 10, 2026 to June 30, 2026.
As per the order, activities such as watering of lawns, washing of courtyards, and washing of vehicles during morning water supply hours have been completely prohibited. The civic body has clarified that such usage will be treated as wastage and misuse of water, attracting penalties and possible disconnection under the Water Supply Bye-Laws.
The Corporation has listed specific acts that will be considered violations:
- Washing of vehicles and courtyards
- Watering of lawns
- Any other misuse or wastage of water
- Overflow from overhead or underground water tanks
- Leakage from water meter chambers
- Leakage and overflow from desert coolers
- Wastage due to non-installation of bib taps
- Installation and use of booster pumps directly on water supply lines
Strict penalties and enforcement measures have also been announced. On detection of any violation, a fine of ₹5,788 will be imposed, which will be recovered through regular water bills. Additionally, equipment such as booster pumps and hosepipes used in the violation will be confiscated.
In cases where violations continue even after the penalty is imposed, the water connection will be disconnected immediately without any further notice, the notice states.
The Corporation has further clarified that no prior notice will be given for violations related to washing of vehicles and watering of lawns (points 1 and 2). However, for other violations (points 3 to 8), consumers will be given two days’ time to rectify the issue, failing which the same penalty of ₹5,788 will be levied.
Residents have been urged to cooperate with authorities and conserve water, helping the city manage increased summer demand effectively.
The order has been issued with the approval of the Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh.
