Chandigarh National Lok Adalat Resolves Record 7,745 Cases in a Single Day

The National Lok Adalat held under the National Legal Services Authority, in collaboration with the State Legal Services Authority and the District Legal Services Authority of U.T., Chandigarh, marked a historic achievement by resolving a record 7,745 cases in a single day.
The event, conducted at the District Court, Sector 43, Chandigarh, featured twenty-one benches headed by serving Judicial Officers. The Lok Adalat addressed a diverse array of cases, including criminal compoundable cases, cases under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, bank recovery cases, MACT cases, matrimonial disputes, labour disputes, arbitration matters, and other civil and municipal issues.
Key statistics from the event include:
- Criminal Compoundable Cases: 55 cases involving ₹2,63,500
- Section 138 of N.I. Act: 2,248 cases involving ₹74,85,489
- Bank Recovery Cases: 8 cases involving ₹1,41,99,000
- Motor Accident Claim Cases: 85 cases involving ₹10,68,29,653
- Civil Suits and Rent Cases: 112 cases involving ₹14,35,000
- Arbitration Cases: 66 cases involving ₹13,35,42,690
- Traffic Challans: 7,745 cases with fines totaling ₹37,20,260
Additionally:
- Pre-Litigative Cases: 4,982 cases involving ₹31,94,224 were resolved by the Permanent Lok Adalat.
- Labour Dispute Cases: 8 cases involving ₹12,95,089 were settled by the Labour Court.
- Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT-III): 308 cases disposed of.
- State & District Consumer Commissions: 62 cases resolved.
- MACT Cases: Significant settlements included ₹37,00,000 and ₹54,50,000 awarded to claimants.
District & Sessions Judge Arunvir Vashista, along with Surender Kumar, Member Secretary of the State Legal Services Authority, and Sunil Kumar, Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority, praised the success of the Lok Adalat and encouraged the public to continue utilizing this effective mechanism for swift and economical justice.
