District & Sessions Judge-Cum-Chairman, DLSA, UT Chandigarh Undertakes Inspection Visit to Model Jail and Observation Home; Issues Directions for Welfare of Inmates

The Learned District & Sessions Judge-cum-Chairman, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Union Territory, Chandigarh, accompanied by other Judicial Officers, conducted an official inspection of the Model Jail and the Observation Home situated in U.T., Chandigarh. The visit was part of the ongoing mandate of the DLSA to ensure that the legal and fundamental rights of inmates and juveniles in conflict with law are protected in accordance with constitutional and statutory provisions.
During the visit, the Hon’ble Judge interacted with undertrial prisoners, convicts, and children in conflict with law, giving them an opportunity to voice their grievances. Upon careful consideration of the issues raised, immediate directions were issued to the concerned jail and observation home authorities for their redressal, in consonance with the principles of natural justice and human dignity as enshrined under Article 21 of the Constitution of India.
The Hon’ble Chairman also conducted a thorough inspection of the jail kitchen and canteen facilities to ascertain compliance with the provisions of the Punjab Jail Manual and other applicable regulatory norms. Instructions were given to maintain adequate and hygienic food stock in the canteen and to ensure the provision of nutritious meals to the inmates in accordance with the prescribed dietary standards.
The visit reaffirmed the commitment of the District Legal Services Authority to uphold the rule of law and safeguard the legal rights and humane treatment of all persons in custody and institutional care.
