District Road Safety Committee Meeting: Key Road Safety Initiatives and Timelines Set for Chandigarh

A meeting of the District Road Safety Committee (DRSC) was held under the Chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner, UT Chandigarh U.T. Chandigarh to discuss and update of the status of the various road safety related issues. The meeting was attended by the SSP/Traffic & Security, representatives of UT Engineering Department, Municipal Corporation/Chandigarh, Architecture Department, Urban Town Planning Department/UT, Electrical Department, STA/Chandigarh, Transport Department, Sh. Harman Sidhu of ArriveSafe NGO, all DSsP/Traffic and Road Safety Experts of Chandigarh Road Safety Society (CRSS) among others.
The action taken on the agenda points of the last meeting was presented to the Committee which includes provision of Pick and Drop Points for Auto Rickshaws on slow carriageways adjoining Madhya Marg, physical segregation of cycle tracks marked on main carriageway roads [i.e. from Transport Light Point to Tribune Chowk alongside the Mango Garden on both sides on Marg], Back-up of Automatic Traffic Control Signal Lights (ATC) at all traffic junctions, installation of ATC Signal at intersection near Khuda Lahora Bridge on Madhya Marg, yellow road marking in the middle of the road on Vigyan Path along with required road signages to avoid overtaking and provision of medians on sectors V-5 roads entry/exit from V-4 road for the safety of the road users, provision of timer for cyclists/pedestrian signal lights and signal of U-turn at all the traffic signal lights in the city etc.
Apart from the above, fresh agenda items for the meeting were also discussed which includes installation of Pedestrian Pelican Lights at important vulnerable locations/junctions in the city and repair/replacement of defective traffic signages in the city. The timelines of the ibid engineering works have been discussed in the meeting and they have been asked to complete the ibid works related to road safety in stipulated time period on priority basis for the safety of the road users
