Election for the 17th Vice-President of India to Be Held on 9th September 2025

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the schedule for the 17th Vice-Presidential Election, following the vacancy in the office of the Vice-President as per Notification No. S.O. 3354(E) dated 22 July 2025 issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Invoking Article 68(2) of the Constitution and Section 4 of the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952, the Commission is mandated to conduct the election as soon as possible after the vacancy occurs. The person elected will hold office for a full five-year term from the date of assuming office.
🏛️ Electoral College & Voting Method
The Vice-President is elected by an Electoral College comprising 782 members from both Houses of Parliament, using the proportional representation system through a single transferable vote. Each MP has one vote, and the voting is by secret ballot.
Voting will take place in Room No. F-101, Vasudha, Parliament House, New Delhi, with strict adherence to secrecy and voting protocols. Use of any pen other than the one supplied by the Election Commission will render the vote invalid.

Nomination Requirements: A candidate must be proposed by 20 electors and seconded by another 20 electors (MPs only), with a security deposit of ₹15,000.

Secret Ballot & No Party Whip: Voting is strictly secret. Political parties are prohibited from issuing whips, and any violation, including bribery or undue influence, can invalidate the election.
