EU Launches New Entry/Exit System to Modernize Border Checks

The Voice of Chandigarh

The European Union has officially launched its Entry/Exit System (EES), a digital border-management system aimed at automating and streamlining checks for non‑EU nationals travelling to the Schengen Area for short stays. The new system replaces traditional passport stamping with biometric registration, including fingerprints and facial recognition, along with travel document information.

The EES is being introduced in a phased rollout, with full deployment expected by April 10, 2026. During the transition period, procedures may vary between border points, though all non-EU travellers entering the Schengen zone will eventually register their biometric data upon arrival.

EU officials said the system is designed to enhance border security, reduce identity fraud, and provide accurate tracking of visitor entries and exits. Authorities also emphasized that personal data will be stored in compliance with strict EU privacy standards, with oversight mechanisms in place to safeguard information.

Travelers are advised to anticipate minor delays during the initial phase of the rollout and follow instructions provided at border crossings. The EU Commission and associated agencies have launched awareness campaigns to ensure smooth adaptation for travelers, airlines, and border agencies alike.

Once fully operational, the EES is expected to eliminate manual passport stamping across the Schengen Area, marking a major step in modernizing Europe’s border management system.
