Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s Official Visit to Bangladesh: Strengthening Bilateral Ties

The Voice of Chandigarh News – India’s Foreign Secretary, Shri Vikram Misri, visited Dhaka today for an official engagement aimed at enhancing bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh. During his visit, Foreign Secretary Misri met with the Chief Adviser of the Interim Government of Bangladesh, H.E. Dr. Muhammad Yunus, and the Foreign Affairs Adviser, H.E. Md. Touhid Hossain. He also held Foreign Office Consultations with Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary, H.E. Mr. Jashim Uddin.

In his discussions, Foreign Secretary Misri reiterated India’s unwavering support for a democratic, stable, and inclusive Bangladesh. He expressed India’s commitment to fostering a positive and constructive relationship with Bangladesh, emphasizing mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity towards each other’s concerns. Misri highlighted that people-to-people engagement is at the heart of India-Bangladesh relations, underscoring India’s development cooperation and multifaceted engagements with Bangladesh, which span areas such as connectivity, trade, power, energy, and capacity building, all aimed at benefiting the people of Bangladesh.

The meetings also addressed recent developments in the region. Foreign Secretary Misri raised concerns regarding the safety and welfare of minorities in Bangladesh and condemned recent attacks on cultural, religious, and diplomatic properties.

During the Foreign Office Consultations, both sides held comprehensive talks on a wide array of issues, including political and security matters, border management, trade, commerce, and connectivity. They also discussed cooperation in water, power, and energy sectors, development cooperation, and consular, cultural, and people-to-people ties. The two sides also exchanged views on sub-regional, regional, and multilateral issues, agreeing to further enhance consultations and cooperation to advance regional integration, particularly within the BIMSTEC framework.

Foreign Secretary Misri’s visit is expected to sustain and deepen bilateral engagements between India and Bangladesh, addressing both concerns and advancing substantive issues to strengthen the relationship.
