
Hon’ble Administrator Reviews Functioning of UT Chandigarh Police, Emphasizes Law Enforcement and Community Engagement
Gulab Chand Kataria, Hon’ble Governor of Punjab and Administrator of UT Chandigarh, reviewed the functioning of all police units of U.T. Chandigarh. The meeting was attended by Rajeev Verma, IAS, Chief Secretary; Mandip Singh Brar, Home Secretary; Surendra Singh Yadav, IPS, Director General of Police; and other senior officers. The DGP, U.T. Chandigarh, presented an overview of the performance, challenges, and achievements of various police units, including crime investigation, traffic management, law enforcement, cybercrime, and community outreach. The presentation highlighted efforts in crime reduction, traffic regulation, and fostering stronger community relationships.

At the outset, the Hon’ble Administrator was apprised of the strict enforcement of traffic rules, both manually and digitally. It was noted that online challans have increased while accidents have decreased. The Hon’ble Administrator appreciated the traffic police for taking action against habitual violators.
The Hon’ble Administrator was also briefed on successes in solving complex cases, particularly in areas such as cybercrime and drug trafficking. It was highlighted that emergency services are being provided within an average response time of 6.18 minutes, the best in the country.
Narcotics-related issues were discussed in detail. The Hon’ble Administrator was informed about stringent actions taken against narcotics suppliers, including the opening of Preventive Detention under the PITNDPS Act and the attachment of property acquired through illegal means. He directed the police to continue their efforts to curb the drug menace and also emphasized the need for rehabilitation programs for drug addicts.

The Hon’ble Administrator reviewed the progress of newly enacted laws and their enforcement. He instructed the police department to ensure their effective implementation and raise public awareness regarding legal provisions.
The rising threat of cybercrime was discussed extensively. The Hon’ble Administrator stressed the need for capacity-building initiatives, including specialized training for officers, and urged efforts to maximize public awareness about emerging cyber frauds.
While expressing satisfaction with the efforts of the Chandigarh Administration and Chandigarh Police, the Hon’ble Administrator emphasized the importance of maintaining law and order with utmost diligence and ensuring a secure environment for residents. He reiterated the significance of community policing and responsive governance in effectively addressing citizens’ concerns.
