Justice Surya Kant Appointed as the Next Chief Justice of India; To Assume Office on November 24

In a significant development, the President of India has appointed Justice Surya Kant, Judge of the Supreme Court, as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI). He will assume charge on 24th November 2025, succeeding Chief Justice B. R. Gavai.

The Warrant of Appointment has been formally signed by the Hon’ble President, and the notification has been issued by the Department of Justice, Government of India.

Born on 10 February 1962 in Petwar village, Hisar district of Haryana, Justice Surya Kant obtained his law degree from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak in 1984 and began his legal practice at the District Courts, Hisar. A year later, he moved to the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chandigarh, where he earned recognition for his expertise in Constitutional, Service, and Civil Law matters.

In July 2000, Justice Surya Kant made history by becoming the youngest Advocate General of Haryana and was designated a Senior Advocate. His judicial journey began with his elevation as a Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in January 2004.

After serving with distinction on the Governing Body of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) from 2007 to 2011, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in October 2018, before being elevated to the Supreme Court of India in May 2019.

Currently serving as the Executive Chairman of NALSA since May 2025, Justice Surya Kant is also a member of several committees of the Indian Law Institute.

Over his illustrious four-decade career, Justice Surya Kant has delivered landmark judgments spanning constitutional, civil, and human rights law, earning a reputation for his balanced approach, clarity of reasoning, and empathetic judicial philosophy.

His elevation marks the rise of a jurist known for blending academic excellence, judicial wisdom, and humane understanding—qualities that have defined his journey from Hisar to the nation’s highest judicial office.
