The Voice of Chandigarh

Arun Kumar Aggarwal, Additional District and Session Judge- cum- Member Secretary, State Legal Services Authority, U.T. Chandigarh, along with Sunil Kumar, Chief Judicial Magistrate-cum-Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, Chandigarh, held a media briefing regarding the upcoming National Lok Adalat scheduled to be held on 14th March 2026.

Arun Kumar Aggarwal highlighted the significance and advantages of Lok Adalats in providing speedy, cost-effective and amicable resolution of disputes. He stated that Lok Adalats offer an accessible platform for litigants to settle their cases through mutual consent, thereby saving valuable time and litigation expenses. He further emphasized that the decisions passed in Lok Adalats have the same legal status as a decree of a civil court and are final and binding on the parties, with no provision for appeal.

He also informed that one of the major benefits of settling cases in Lok Adalats is that the court fee paid by the parties is refunded in accordance with the rules. The process is simple, informal and ensures that disputes are resolved in a cordial and non-adversarial manner, which helps in maintaining harmony between the parties.

Sunil Kumar, CJM-cum-Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, Chandigarh, informed that a large number of cases, including pending matters before courts as well as pre-litigation disputes, are proposed to be taken up during the Lok Adalat. These may include cases related to bank recovery, motor accident claims, matrimonial disputes, cheque bounce matters under the Negotiable Instruments Act, labour disputes, electricity and water bills, and other compoundable cases.

He appealed to the general public and litigants to take advantage of this opportunity by getting their disputes settled through the Lok Adalat in a speedy and amicable manner.

The officials also urged the parties concerned to contact the District Legal Services Authority, Chandigarh, for further information and facilitation regarding the settlement of their cases in the forthcoming Lok Adalat.
