The Voice of Chandigarh News: A meeting of the District Road Safety Committee (DRSC) was held on under the Chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner, UT Chandigarh to discuss various road safety related issues.
The meeting was attended by the SSP/Traffic & Security, representatives of UT Engineering Department, Municipal Corporation/Chandigarh, Architect Department, Urban Town Planning Department/UT, representatives of NHAI, STA/Chandigarh, all DSsP/Traffic and Experts of Chandigarh Road Safety Society (CRSS) among others. The action taken on the agenda points of the last meeting held was presented to the Committee and fresh agenda items for the meeting were discussed.
The focus remained on the designing, quality and visibility of the table tops constructed at Sector 46/47/48/49 Chowk, 44/45/50/51 Chowk, 42/43-52/53 Chowk, Sector 25/38 Light Point which are not as per IRC code, provision of adequate lighting and required road furniture i.e. cat eyes studs, cautionary traffic signages of table-top ahead which need to be installed by the concerned Engineering department as they improve the visibility of the table-top to the road users and to avoid any untoward incident.
Some of the key decisions taken were improvement of existing Mid-Block pedestrian crossing for the safety of the pedestrians across the city, earmarking of Pick and Drop Points for Auto Rickshaws on Madhya Marg on a pilot basis, provision of extreme Left lane for buses/trucks/taxis/commercial vehicles on the city roads by proper road marking and traffic signages for indicating the lane for plying of buses/trucks in this lane, physical segregation of cycle tracks marked on main carriageway roads and providing separate cycle track on road berm area on Uttar Marg and on Dakshin Marg from TPT Light Point upto Fun Republic Light Point and on Purv Marg from TPT Light upto Tribune Chowk in the area adjoining the mango garden, provision of Arrow Markings on road lanes approaching the roundabout/intersection to inculcate the lane driving discipline from a distance of atleast 100 meters before the approaching pedestrian crossing markings, illegal opening of gates by the residence towards cycle tracks, non-functional of street lights, installation of strong iron grills at the broken/missing locations on major road carriageways to avoid criss-crossing of road by the pedestrians and motorists, parking area for vehicles around Apni Mandis being held in various sectors in the city and construction of neighborhood roundabouts as temporary measures for decongestion.
The concerned departments have been asked to implement the decisions taken within stipulated time period on priority basis for the safely of the road users.
