National Lok Adalat held at Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chandigarh

Under the patronage of the Hon’ble Mr. Justice Ravi Shanker Jha, Chief Justice, Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chandigarh and the auspice guidance of the Hon’ble Mr.Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia, Chairman, High Court Legal Services Committee, Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chandigarh, National Lok Adalat was held on 13.05.2023 (Saturday) comprising of five benches presided over by the Hon’ble High Court Judges as President alongwith Learned Senior Advocates as Member, out of total 351 cases listed about 151 FAO (MACT) matters were disposed of, inclusive of a high stake matter titled as Tanushree & others Vs. Rajender & others bearing No. FAO – 2219 – 2017 relating to HDFC (EG) where an amount of `. 1,51,00,000/- (One Crore Fifty One Lacs Rupees) was awarded over and above the amount granted by the Tribunal.

In the face of an unprecedented situation created by the pandemic, the High Court Legal Services Committee under the auspice of the Hon’ble Mr. Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia, is constantly adapting to the new norms and coming up with creative and viable solutions by ingeniously integrated technology with inclusive humane approach into conventional methods of justice delivery. One such innovation is the introduction of Lok Adalat, where technology has been used to its maximum advantage by becoming a platform to outreach and deliver justice at the doorstep of people, while incorporating the spirit of compromise and understanding between the parties thus ensuring an inexpensive, enduring and expeditious justice alongwith overall peace, progress and prosperity.

Lok Adalat is a forum where the disputes/cases pending in the court of law or at prelitigation stage are settled/compromised amicably. The Lok Adalat has been given statutory status under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987. Under the said Act, the award made by the Lok Adalats is deemed to be the decree of a civil court and is final and binding on all parties and no appeal lies before any court against its award.
