National Lok Adalat Resolves 2,792 Cases in Chandigarh, Promoting Quick and Economical Justice

The National Lok Adalat was successfully organized under the guidance of Hon’ble Mrs. Justice Lisa Gill, Executive Chairperson of the State Legal Services Authority, U.T. Chandigarh. The event took place at the District Court Complex, Sector 43, Chandigarh, and was jointly organized by the State Legal Services Authority, U.T., Chandigarh, and the District Legal Services Authority, U.T., Chandigarh.
Fifteen benches, each headed by a serving Judicial Officer, were constituted in the District Courts. Various types of cases, including criminal compoundable cases, Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act cases, bank recovery cases, MACT cases, matrimonial disputes, labor disputes, arbitration matters, civil cases, municipal matters, and traffic challans, were taken up. The cases were disposed of with the consent of the parties involved.
In total, 2,792 cases were resolved during the event. This included:
- 4 criminal compoundable cases
- 2,229 cases under Section 138 of the N.I. Act, involving Rs. 1,64,81,732/-
- 70 Motor Accident Claim (MACT) cases, involving Rs. 9,85,75,000/-
- 38 matrimonial/family disputes
- 120 civil suits and rent cases, involving Rs. 32,65,500/-
- 76 executions, involving Rs. 4,12,68,425/-
- 8 criminal revision cases, involving Rs. 1,07,000/-
- 29 criminal miscellaneous cases
- 30 civil miscellaneous cases, involving Rs. 2,46,04,195/-
- 22 arbitration cases
- 5 civil/rent appeals
- 19 cases under Section 125 Cr.P.C.
- 19 cases under the Domestic Violence Act
- 62 untraceable cases
- 33 criminal appeals, involving Rs. 27,32,000/-
- 18 cases under the ROC/Shop Act
- 10 guardian and ward act cases
- 1,630 traffic challans, with fines totaling Rs. 16,23,500/-
In addition, 667 pre-litigative cases, involving Rs. 80,85,350/-, were resolved by the Permanent Lok Adalat (PUS). The Labour Court resolved 4 labor dispute cases, involving Rs. 11,94,067/-. The State and District Consumer Commissions, Chandigarh, resolved 64 cases, while the Debts Recovery Tribunal (DRT-III), Chandigarh, resolved 189 cases.
A notable case involved a maintenance dispute where the parties, after living separately for one year, decided to reconcile and give their marriage a second chance, thanks to the intervention of the presiding officer, members, and their counsel.
