In a candid conversation, Mr. Vishal Kalia, Principal of CIHM and a seasoned expert in hospitality education since June 1995, shares insights into the Chandigarh Institute of Hotel Management & Catering Technology (CIHM). Tell us about yourself and the Institute
I am Vishal Kalia, and I joined the Chandigarh Institute of Hotel Management & Catering Technology (CIHM) in June 1995. The Institute is sponsored by the Government of India and the Chandigarh Administration. It is affiliated with the National Council for Hotel Management & Catering Technology (NCHMCT), Noida, under the aegis of the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India.
Established in 1973, CIHM, formerly known as the Food Craft Institute Chandigarh, is a prestigious institution that provides quality hospitality education to students from across India. As one of the leading catering institutes in the country, CIHM trains 360 students annually, equipping them to excel as professionals in the hospitality and allied industries.
The Institute operates under the chairmanship of the Hon’ble Secretary, Home and Tourism, UT, Chandigarh, and continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of India’s hospitality sector.
What programs or courses does the Institute offer in the field of Hotel Management?
The Chandigarh Institute of Hotel Management & Catering Technology offers a 3-year B.Sc. in Hospitality & Hotel Administration program with 120 seats, as well as five Diploma Courses in Hospitality Operations, which accommodate 240 seats.
In addition to providing high-quality education, the institute is actively involved in practical training and community-focused activities. This includes operating Hotel Chandigarh Beckons, a 26-room facility designed to give students hands-on training.
Notably, the institute has earned the distinction of being certified as the FIRST EAT RIGHT CAMPUS by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), the Government of India, highlighting its commitment to promoting safe and healthy food practices.
Can you outline the admission process for prospective students at your institute?
Students seeking admission to the 3-year B.Sc. in Hospitality & Hotel Administration program must appear for the National Council for Hotel Management Joint Entrance Examination (NCHM JEE). This entrance exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in a Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode.
The NCHM JEE serves as the standardized gateway for admission to all Institutes of Hotel Management (IHMs) affiliated with the National Council for Hotel Management & Catering Technology (NCHMCT), Noida, ensuring a transparent, merit-based selection process.
What are the key eligibility criteria for applicants to the various hotel management programs?
Applicants must have completed Class 12 with English as a compulsory subject. Additionally, there is no age limit for admission, in line with the guidelines of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
How much practical training is integrated into the course structure, and how does it benefit the students?
The B.Sc. in Hospitality and Hotel Administration (B.Sc. H&HA) is a highly practical-oriented program designed to provide students with hands-on experience and valuable industry insights. As part of the curriculum, students undergo 20 hours of practical training per week across various subjects, including Food Production, Food and Beverage Service, Front Office, Housekeeping, Computer Applications, Yoga, and Communication Skills.
This immersive training allows students to develop a comprehensive understanding of industry operations. Furthermore, during their Industrial Training (IT) in the second year, students gain real-world exposure, which helps them grasp the functioning of the hospitality sector in-depth. By the final year, students are well-prepared to meet industry demands and excel as competent professionals.
How does the Institute assist students in securing internships and placements after graduation?
The Institute has a dedicated Training & Placement Cell that actively supports students in securing both internships and placements each year. The cell provides guidance, conducts mock interviews, organizes campus recruitment drives, and connects students with potential employers in the hospitality industry.
What has been the placement record for the past few years, and which reputed companies frequently hire from the Institute?
The Institute has consistently maintained a 100% placement record every year for students who participate in the campus recruitment process. Renowned hospitality brands such as Taj, Oberoi, ITC, Accor, IHG, The Lalit, McDonald’s, Third Wave Coffee, Jio World, and other leading retail chains regularly visit the campus to conduct interviews for final-year students.
How does the Institute promote extracurricular activities and student engagement beyond the classroom?
To foster holistic development and encourage extracurricular engagement, the Institute organizes a variety of in-house events and competitions. These include salad-making contests, cocktail and mocktail preparation challenges, as well as celebrations such as Sports Day, Teachers’ Day, and Annual Day.
These activities provide students with opportunities to showcase their creativity and skills, while also promoting teamwork, innovation, and a strong sense of community within the Institute.

The Institute is planning several initiatives to enhance both students’ experiences and academic excellence. These include expanding collaboration between industry and academia, preparing students for entrepreneurship, and encouraging joint research initiatives. Additionally, the Institute is focused on integrating sustainable, eco-friendly practices and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives with local NGOs. The Institute also aims to upgrade its infrastructure to state-of-the-art facilities and strengthen the Alumni Mentorship Program.
