Traffic and Road Safety Awareness Van Launched by Governor
The Voice of Chandigarh : In a significant step toward promoting safer roads and responsible driving, the Governor of Punjab and Administrator UT Chandigarh, Gulab Chand Kataria, launched the innovative Road Safety Exhibition Van and unveiled the Chandigarh Traffic Police Annual Report 2023. Both initiatives are aimed at reducing accidents and fostering a culture of accountability and safety on Chandigarh’s roads.
The Road Safety Exhibition Van, an unprecedented initiative in the region, is designed to deliver road safety education directly to the community. The mobile van, equipped with interactive displays, audiovisual aids, and live safety demonstrations, will traverse the city, visiting schools, market areas, busy intersections, and residential neighborhoods.
It aims to engage citizens of all ages, providing practical lessons on responsible driving, pedestrian safety, and adherence to traffic rules. At the launch, Gulab Chand Kataria stressed the importance of instilling road safety habits early, advocating for its inclusion in school curriculums to build awareness among the youth.
Complementing this initiative, the Governor also released the Chandigarh Traffic Police Annual Report 2023, which highlights a 24% reduction in road accidents over the past year. The report attributes this success to increased enforcement measures, including 9.2 lakh challans issued and Rs. 10.4 crore collected in fines.
It also outlines technological advancements like AI-based traffic management systems and comprehensive awareness campaigns as pivotal factors in improving road safety across the city.
Mr. Kataria commended the Chandigarh Traffic Police and Administration for their innovative and proactive efforts, noting that these combined measures have already started yielding significant results. He expressed optimism that the Road Safety Exhibition Van, together with the lessons drawn from the annual report, will further strengthen Chandigarh’s journey toward safer roads.
Rajeev Verma, Advisor to the Administrator ,Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) to the Governor, K. Siva Prasad, Surendra Yadav, DGP Chandigarh, Mandeep Singh Brar, Home Secretary, Abhijit Vijay Chaudhari, Special Secretary to the Administrator and other officers were also present during the launch.
