UT Estate Office Cracks Down on Violations by Kabadiwalas and Scrap Dealers in Periphery

In a stringent move to address environmental violations, the UT Estate Office, under the leadership of Estate Officer-cum-Deputy Commissioner Vinay Pratap Singh, has initiated decisive actions against Kabadiwalas and Scrap Dealers illegally operating in the agricultural lands of UT Chandigarh’s villages.

In a recent meeting with all Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs), Deputy Commissioner Vinay Pratap Singh emphasized the urgency of curbing the illegal construction of shops and scrap segregation areas by Kabadiwalas and Scrap Dealers. These activities have led to significant pollution, contaminating both the air and water through ground seepage.

During the review of actions under the Periphery Control Act, SDM East reported that 332 notices had been issued to the violators in the East sub-division. The Kabadiwalas and Scrap Dealers have challenged these orders in the Hon’ble High Court, and the matter is currently sub judice. The department is actively pursuing the case in the High Court, and necessary actions will be implemented as soon as a decision is rendered.

Similarly, SDMs from the South and Central divisions have been instructed to conduct surveys within the next three weeks. These surveys will identify any violations of the Periphery Control Act, and appropriate notices will be issued to the Kabadiwalas and Scrap Dealers operating illegally within the UT Chandigarh territory.
