The Voice of Chandigarh
On the eve of India’s 79th Independence Day, President Droupadi Murmu delivered a stirring address to the nation, urging citizens to unite in building a Viksit Bharat (Developed India) by 2047. Speaking from Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President paid homage to freedom fighters, acknowledged the pain of Partition, and highlighted India’s rapid progress across economic, social, and technological fronts.
Economic Resilience & Growth
President Murmu lauded India’s position as the world’s fastest-growing major economy with a GDP growth rate of 6.5% last fiscal, despite global headwinds. She credited carefully calibrated reforms, robust infrastructure expansion, and the resilience of farmers, workers, and entrepreneurs for driving the nation’s economic momentum.
Social Welfare & Inclusion
Emphasising justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity as the pillars of democracy, she noted significant strides in poverty reduction, healthcare, and rural development. Schemes like Jal Jeevan Mission and Ayushman Bharat have improved access to clean water and healthcare, benefitting millions, including senior citizens over 70 years of age.
Technological Leadership
The President hailed India’s global leadership in digital transactions, the expansion of 4G to nearly all villages, and the government’s push in Artificial Intelligence through the India-AI Mission. She said technology must serve governance and uplift the lives of common people.
Youth, Women & Marginalised as Growth Drivers
President Murmu spotlighted youth entrepreneurship, sports achievements, and the space sector’s success, citing astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla’s mission to the ISS as a national inspiration. She praised women breaking barriers, with examples from defence, sports, and governance under the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. She also highlighted initiatives empowering Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Backward Classes.
Defence Self-Reliance & Security
Referring to the recent Operation Sindoor against cross-border terrorism, she hailed the armed forces’ decisive action and the role of indigenous defence manufacturing in securing the nation.
Environmental Stewardship & National Unity
Urging a shift in habits to combat climate change, she called for harmony with nature. The President underscored unity as the strongest response to those attempting to divide the country.
Closing with a Pledge
Quoting Mahatma Gandhi’s warning against corruption, President Murmu urged citizens to uphold integrity, unity, and a shared vision for a prosperous, self-reliant India. She extended greetings to soldiers, police, judiciary, civil servants, and the Indian diaspora, concluding with a spirited “Jai Hind, Jai Bharat!”
