Acknowledges Chandigarh as the First in the Country to Fully Implement India’s New Legal Codes

The Voice of Chandigarh : Bandi Sanjay Kumar, Hon’ble Minister of State for Home Affairs, Government of India, today visited the Government College of Commerce & Business Administration, Sector 50, Chandigarh, to lay the foundation stone and inaugurate several development projects in the Union Territory.

Welcoming the chief guest, Rajeev Verma, Chief Secretary, UT Chandigarh, highlighted the city’s achievements in multiple areas, including the privatization of electricity distribution, rooftop solar saturation, and Chandigarh’s strong performance in the SDG India Index. He stated that the five major projects inaugurated and foundation stone laid today, mark a comprehensive transformation in education, housing, security, and infrastructure development across the city.

The Union Minister of State for Home Affairs inaugurated the Hostel Block (Boys & Girls) at the Commerce College, Sector 50. He also virtually inaugurated the 2,500 KW Floating Solar Power Plant at Water Works, Sector 39; the Extension Block of Government Senior Secondary School, Kajheri; and the IT Block at Post Graduate Government College, Sector 46. Additionally, he virtually laid the foundation stone for the construction of 144 residential units in the Chandigarh Armed Police Complex at Dhanas.

In his address, Bandi Sanjay Kumar described Chandigarh as a true embodiment of the spirit of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.” He commended the city’s progress in development, transparency, and security, noting that the implementation of Smart City projects, road and public transport modernization, digital governance, ease-of-living initiatives, and Green India and Swachh Bharat missions have brought tangible improvements to citizens’ lives.

He underscored that Chandigarh holds the distinction of being the first in the country to fully implement the three new legal frameworks—the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam. The city’s pioneering adoption of these new criminal, civil, and evidence laws marks a historic step toward strengthening citizen protection and justice delivery.

“The projects inaugurated and foundation stones laid today reflect not only Chandigarh’s development but also the broader national vision and commitment under the principle of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas,’” he stated. He emphasized that these initiatives will enhance educational quality, safety, and infrastructure, empower youth with technology skills through the new IT Block, and provide better living conditions for police personnel through the housing project in Dhanas.

The Union Minister of State for Home Affairs also commended the collective efforts of the Chandigarh Police, Chandigarh Administration, and the citizens in addressing drug eradication, cybercrime prevention, women’s safety, and traffic management. He reaffirmed the Central Government’s commitment to supporting the Union Territory in strengthening peace, disaster response, and cyber security.

Looking ahead to the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, Shri Bandi Sanjay Kumar expressed confidence that India will emerge as the world’s leading economic power. As part of this mission, Chandigarh will be developed as a Knowledge Hub, Wellness City, and a model of smart governance. He congratulated all officials, planners, engineers, workers, and citizens of UT Chandigarh for their dedication and initiative toward this transformation.

Present on the occasion were Harpreet Kaur Babla, Mayor of Chandigarh; Satya Pal Jain, Additional Solicitor General of India; Pushpendra Singh, Director General of Police; Diprava Lakra, Finance Secretary; Amit Kumar, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation; Saurabh Kumar, Secretary, Science & Technology and Environment; C.B. Ojha, Chief Engineer, and other senior officials of the Chandigarh Administration.
