Governor Reviews Dadumajra Dumping Ground, Emphasises Speedy Waste Clearance and Environmental Restoration

The Hon’ble Governor of Punjab and Administrator of UT Chandigarh, Gulab Chand Kataria, visited the Dadumajra Dumping Ground to check the current situation of waste management and to see what steps are being taken to solve environmental and public health problems.

The Governor reviewed the progress of bio-mining and other scientific methods being used to clear the old waste. Officials informed him that three MRF centres are currently working to separate and process waste and that no new garbage heaps are being formed. Work is continuing to remove the existing garbage mound.

During the visit, officials informed the Governor that no fresh garbage has been dumped at the site since February, as all waste is now being sent to Material Recovery Facility (MRF) centres for proper processing. The Governor highlighted the importance of expediting the removal of legacy waste to ensure early relief and enhanced environmental and health benefits for nearby residents.

The Governor directed that the dumping ground area should be developed into a green zone with more tree plantation to improve the environment and increase Chandigarh’s green cover. He also instructed the concerned departments to speed up the waste clearance work.

Later, the Governor visited Transport Nagar and the Vegetable Market, Sector 26. He advised officials to improve traffic management and ensure proper security in the area. He also stressed the need to maintain cleanliness and provide adequate sanitation facilities for people using these facilities.

During the visit to the vegetable market, the Governor interacted with vendors, listened to their problems, and directed officers to take necessary action to resolve the issues.

Present during the visit were Harpreet Kaur Babla, Mayor of Chandigarh; H. Rajesh Prasad, IAS, Chief Secretary, Chandigarh Administration; Vivek Pratap Singh, Principal Secretary to Governor; Mandeep Singh Brar, Home Secretary; Nishant Yadav, Deputy Commissioner; Amit Kumar, Municipal Commissioner; C. B. Ojha, Chief Engineer; and other senior officers of the Chandigarh Administration.
