AAP Sweeps Mohali Civic Polls, Sarabjit Singh Samana Elected Mayor
The Voice of Chandigarh
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) retained control of the Mohali Municipal Corporation by winning all three top posts in elections. Sarabjit Singh Samana was elected Mayor, while R.P. Sharma became Senior Deputy Mayor and Harpal Channi was chosen as Deputy Mayor.
The mayoral race witnessed a last-minute twist. Although Dr. Sunny Ahluwalia was considered the frontrunner, the party leadership eventually backed Sarabjit Singh Samana. Political observers believe the support of MLA Kulwant Singh, Samana’s father, played a key role in his victory.
Punjab AAP chief and minister Aman Arora personally monitored the election process and later congratulated the newly elected Mayor along with Kulwant Singh and Dr. Ahluwalia, projecting party unity.
The election also saw political protests, with Congress boycotting the proceedings and the Shiromani Akali Dal councillor staging a walkout. Despite this, the voting process was completed peacefully under tight security arrangements, including mobile phone restrictions and controlled entry of councillors into the Municipal Corporation building.
