AAP Sweeps Punjab Municipal Elections, Secures Nearly Half of All Wards

The final results of the Punjab Municipal General Elections 2026 have delivered a decisive victory for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which emerged as the largest political force across urban local bodies in the state by winning 958 out of 1,977 wards.
According to the final result sheet released after polling held on May 26, AAP dominated the elections to Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats, securing nearly half of all wards contested.
The Indian National Congress (INC) finished a distant second with 397 wards, while Independent candidates registered a significant presence by winning 251 wards. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) secured 192 wards, followed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with 172 wards. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) won 7 wards.
In the Municipal Corporation elections, AAP won 199 of the 400 wards, while Congress secured 94 wards and BJP won 69 wards. SAD managed 13 wards, while Independents captured 25 wards.
The party’s strongest performance came in the Municipal Council elections, where it won 654 of 1,331 wards. Congress secured 277 wards, Independents 178, SAD 113, BJP 103, and BSP 6 wards.
In the Nagar Panchayat elections, AAP won 105 of the 246 wards. SAD emerged as the second-largest force with 66 wards, followed by Independents with 48 wards, Congress with 26 wards, and BSP with 1 ward.
The results underline AAP’s continued dominance in Punjab’s urban political landscape, while Congress, SAD and BJP face the challenge of rebuilding their support base ahead of future electoral contests. The final tally also includes 80 candidates who were elected unopposed, as reflected in the official result sheet.
With the municipal elections now concluded, political observers are expected to closely watch how the outcome influences the state’s political dynamics in the coming years.
