BJP Delegation Led by Former Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla Meets UT Administrator; Urges Relief for Chandigarh Housing Board Residents

The Voice of Chandigarh

A high-level delegation of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by former Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla, met with Gulab Chand Kataria, the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of UT Chandigarh, to address the growing anxiety among city residents regarding recent notices issued by the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB).

Growing Public Concern

The meeting comes in the wake of widespread fear following media reports of potential demolition drives and strict enforcement actions targeting houses in Sector 29 and Sector 30. These reports have caused significant mental distress and uncertainty among the local population.

The Delegation

The delegation presented a united front to advocate for the homeowners, including:

  • Harpreet Kaur Babla, Former Mayor, Chandigarh
  • Devinder Singh Babla, State Vice President, BJP Chandigarh
  • Naresh Arora, President, Sector-29 Resident Welfare Association & Spokesperson, BJP Chandigarh
  • Hoshiar Singh, Welfare Association Representative

Key Demands for Relief

The representatives informed the Administrator that the constant threat of demolition has placed an immense psychological burden on common citizens. They urged the administration to:

  • Adopt a humanitarian approach toward residential violations.
  •  Provide a permanent and practical solution to provide relief to CHB allottees.
  • Halt aggressive enforcement actions that disrupt the lives of long-term residents.

Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria listened to the grievances with serious concern. He assured the delegation that he would convene a detailed meeting with administrative officials to review the matter.

The delegation urged the administration to adopt a humanitarian approach. In response to their concerns, it was discussed that for Chandigarh Housing Board houses where no encroachment on government land has taken place, a high-level committee will be constituted

This committee will be tasked with:

  • Examining all cases on an individual basis.
  • Evaluating the nature of building violations within the allotted footprints.
  • Recommending specific relief measures and practical solutions to regularize genuine grievances.

“The administration is fully committed to providing relief to the people of Chandigarh. We will work toward a solution that is both fair and practical,” the Administrator stated.

However, he also noted that cases involving the encroachment of government land would need to be addressed appropriately within the legal framework.

The delegation expressed their gratitude to the Governor for his positive stance and remains optimistic that a resolution will be reached soon, bringing much-needed peace of mind to the residents of Chandigarh.
