BREAKING NEWS : ICMR Detects Two Cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Karnataka; No Surge in Respiratory Illnesses Reported
The Voice of Chandigarh News :
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has detected two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Karnataka through routine surveillance. The cases, both involving infants with bronchopneumonia, were identified at Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru.
The first case is a 3-month-old female, who was discharged after treatment, while the second case involves an 8-month-old male infant, who is currently recovering. Both infants have no history of international travel, ruling out any connection to foreign outbreaks.
Despite the detection of these cases, ICMR has reassured the public that there is no unusual surge in Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases in the country. The ICMR, along with the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), continues to monitor the situation closely.
HMPV, which is known to circulate globally, has been detected in several countries, including India. The Union Health Ministry has stated that the situation is being carefully monitored through surveillance channels, with timely updates being shared by the World Health Organization (WHO), particularly regarding developments in China.
India’s preparedness for respiratory illness outbreaks remains strong, as highlighted by recent national drills, ensuring prompt public health interventions if necessary.
