Chandigarh Business Council Welcomes Enhancement of Minimum Wages

Chandigarh, September 9, 2026: The Chandigarh Business Council (CBC) has welcomed the decision of the Labour Commissioner, Labour Department, UT Chandigarh, to enhance the minimum rates of wages for workers employed in the organised and unorganised sectors in the Union Territory.
The enhanced minimum wage rates are a significant step towards providing relief to workers and strengthening their economic security amid changing economic conditions.
Ajay Gupta, President, Chandigarh Business Council, appreciated the initiative of the UT Administration and said, “The enhancement of minimum wages is a positive and welcome step towards ensuring the welfare and dignity of workers. The workforce is an integral part of the growth and development of Chandigarh, and providing them fair and adequate wages will not only support their families but also contribute to a more motivated, stable and productive workforce. We appreciate the Labour Department and the UT Administration for taking this important measure.”
Gupta further emphasised that a healthy balance between the interests of workers and employers is essential for sustainable economic growth. “The business community understands its responsibility towards its workforce. At the same time, wage revisions should continue to be implemented through a transparent and consultative mechanism, keeping in view the economic realities and the sustainability of businesses, particularly small and medium enterprises,” he added.
Sanjay Pahwa, General Secretary, Chandigarh Business Council, said that the wage enhancement would provide meaningful support to workers in both the organised and unorganised sectors.
“We welcome the Administration’s decision to revise the minimum wages. For workers at the lower end of the wage structure, even a reasonable enhancement can make a meaningful difference to household budgets and living standards. We believe that better wages, coupled with a positive working environment, ultimately strengthen productivity and industrial relations,” said Mr. Pahwa.
Pahwa also highlighted the importance of cooperation between the Administration, employers and workers, stating, “The interests of workers and businesses are closely connected. A financially secure and motivated workforce is an asset to every establishment. We look forward to continued dialogue with the Administration and the Labour Department so that future labour policies remain balanced, practical and beneficial to all stakeholders.”
The Chandigarh Business Council reiterated its support for initiatives aimed at improving worker welfare while simultaneously ensuring a conducive business environment. The Council expressed hope that the enhanced wage rates will provide genuine relief to workers and their families and contribute to greater economic stability in the Union Territory.
The CBC further reaffirmed its commitment to working constructively with the UT Administration, Labour Department, employers and workers towards promoting fair employment practices, worker welfare, productivity, employment generation and sustainable economic development in Chandigarh.
