The campaign was inaugurated with the planting of a sapling at the Punjab and Haryana High Court premises. The drive, to continue throughout the monsoon season, aims to plant lakhs of saplings across court complexes, legal services institutions, judicial residential complexes and other suitable public places in Punjab, Haryana and U.T. Chandigarh. The initiative is being undertaken in collaboration with the Forest Departments of Punjab, Haryana and U.T. Chandigarh, with a focus on indigenous, fruit-bearing, medicinal and shade-giving species.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Justice of India said environmental protection is both a constitutional obligation and a shared moral responsibility. He urged citizens to actively participate in increasing the nation’s green cover by planting and nurturing trees, adding that the true success of the campaign would be measured by the survival and growth of the saplings through sustained care and community participation.
Highlighting the constitutional mandate under Articles 21, 48A and 51A(g), Chief Justice of India said that safeguarding the environment is a shared responsibility and essential for ensuring a cleaner, greener and more sustainable future for generations to come.
