India and Japan significantly strengthened their strategic partnership by announcing 16 major outcomes during the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit, held during the visit of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to India.

The agreements span a wide range of sectors, including economic security, artificial intelligence (AI), energy, critical minerals, pharmaceuticals, mobility, biotechnology, financial services and digital infrastructure, reflecting the growing depth of bilateral cooperation.

A landmark India-Japan Joint Declaration on Economic Security was adopted to enhance collaboration in key sectors such as semiconductors, critical minerals, AI, clean energy and pharmaceuticals. The two countries also elevated their AI partnership through a Joint Statement on Cooperation in the Field of Artificial Intelligence, providing a roadmap for research, innovation and the development of safe, secure and human-centric AI technologies.

In the energy sector, both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation on strategic crude oil reserves and maritime energy transport, while a new India-Japan Cooperative Biogas for Growth (CBG) Initiative aims to establish 1,000 biogas and organic fertilizer plants across India through dairy cooperatives.

Several Memorandums of Cooperation (MoCs) were signed to expand collaboration in batteries, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, geology and critical mineral exploration, while institutional partnerships were launched between the IndiaAI Mission and Japan’s METI, as well as leading research organisations and universities from both countries.

India and Japan also operationalised the Next Generation Mobility Partnership (NGMP) to promote investments in railways, automobiles, aviation, ports, logistics and urban development under the “Make in India for the World” initiative.

Academic and research collaborations were announced between C-CAMP, the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), IIT Bombay, Japanese research institute RIKEN, the National Institute of Informatics (Japan) and AI companies to advance biotechnology, neuroscience and large language model (LLM) research.

In the digital sector, cooperation was enhanced between the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) and the Japan Network Information Center (JPNIC) to improve internet governance, cybersecurity and IPv6 adoption. Financial sector ties were also strengthened through an exchange of letters between the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) and Japan’s Financial Services Agency (JFSA) on financial regulation, FinTech and RegTech.

The two countries also announced that 2027 will be celebrated as the “India-Japan Year of Shared Horizons” to mark the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, with a series of commemorative events planned throughout the year.

The outcomes reaffirm the commitment of India and Japan to expanding cooperation in emerging technologies, resilient supply chains, clean energy, innovation and sustainable economic growth while reinforcing their long-standing Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
