Demonstrating an unwavering commitment towards environmental conservation, the Residents Welfare Association (RWA), Sector 27, organised its annual Plantation Drive in the green belt of Sector 27. The drive was led by Ward No. 10 Councillor and Former Mayor, Harpreet Kaur Babla, Sector-27 RWA President & office bearers, senior citizens, residents, women, youth and officials from the Municipal Corporation’s Horticulture Department.

Despite continuous heavy rainfall, residents turned out in large numbers to support the initiative, reflecting the community’s collective resolve to make Sector 27 greener, cleaner and more environmentally sustainable.

Speaking on the occasion, Harpreet Kaur Babla said that the plantation drive has become a proud annual tradition of Sector 27. She highlighted that every year, nearly 4,000 to 5,000 trees and saplings are planted across the sector, and more than 1,000 trees planted over the years are already flourishing today. She added that the community has now set an ambitious target of increasing the green cover to 7,000 trees in the coming years.

She further emphasized that planting trees is not merely a one-day activity but a long-term commitment. “Every tree we plant today is an investment in a healthier, cleaner and greener future for the next generation. Our responsibility does not end with planting; it begins with nurturing and protecting these trees,” she said.

RAW Sector 27 president Simmi Sandhu and executive members appreciated the enthusiastic participation of the residents despite the inclement weather and said that such community-led initiatives set an example for the entire city. They noted that environmental conservation can only be achieved through active public participation and sustained collective efforts.

Residents, volunteers and Municipal Corporation staff planted a variety of native and ornamental saplings during the drive and pledged to ensure their regular care and maintenance.

The Residents Welfare Association thanked all residents, volunteers and Municipal Corporation officials for making the event a success. The association reiterated its commitment to continuing large-scale plantation drives every year and strengthening Sector 27’s reputation as one of Chandigarh’s greenest and most environmentally conscious neighbourhoods.
