Social Welfare Committee meets under the Chairmanship of Satya Pal Jain – makes various welfare recommendations

The Social Welfare Committee of the Chandigarh Administration reiterated that the evening OPDs in Chandigarh be started in the rural areas first as well as in areas where downtrodden sections of the society are densely located.
The Committee met under the chairmanship of Satya Pal Jain, Ex-MP, in the UT Guest House.
The Committee noted that evening OPDs have been started in Civil Hospital Sector 16 & Manimajra and evening OPDs will be shortly started in Sector 22 and Sector 45 Dispensaries. The Committee recommended to the Administration that, as per its earlier recommendations, it should give priority to start evening OPD in the hospitals in the rural areas, slum areas & areas dominated by the poor section of the society, so that a poor man can get medical care near his residence.
The Committee recommended the constructing of Mazdoor Bhawan in Sector 44, at the site where Labour Chowk is currently situated. The Committee accepted the report of the Sub-Committee setup earlier, which identified this site as the best suitable place for Mazdoor Bhawan, i.e. Sector 44 Labour Chowk.
The Committee was informed that out of total 63 missing children in Chandigarh, 54 have been traced and all efforts are being made to trace the remaining 9 children. The Committee urged the Police Authorities to expedite the process of tracing the remaining children.
The Committee noted that 56 children have been rescued under the category of Child Begging and they are placed in the Child Care Institutes of UT Chandigarh, where facilities like free education and medical aid, etc. are provided to them.
The Committee recommended that a Senior Citizens Home may be planned near Snehalaya in Maloya, where orphaned children are residing, so that with the construction of Senior Citizen Homes, the elderly people and children can mix together and fill in the gap in the lives of both the categories.
The Committee recommended that the issue of revision of Old Age Pension be taken up by the Chandigarh Administration with the Central Government on priority basis so that the old age pension in Chandigarh can be increased to Rs. 2,000/- per month.
The meeting was attended, amongst others, Naveen Kumar, IAS, Davesh Moudgil, Mukesh Goyal, Shivendra Mandotra, Lakhveer Singh, Anamika Walia, Rama Matharu, Lata Giri, Rajendra Sharma, Sanjeev Gulati, Deepak Garg, Isha Bhardwaj, in addition to the representatives from the Chandigarh Police, Municipal Corporation, Town Planning and Chief Engineers offices of Chandigarh Administration.
