Special Lok Adalat Disposes of 1,046 Cases in Chandigarh; Settlements Worth Over ₹5.70 Crore

Under the aegis of the State Legal Services Authority, U.T. Chandigarh and under the guidance of  Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra, Acting Chief Justice-cum-Patron-in-Chief, State Legal Services Authority, U.T. Chandigarh, and  Justice Harsimran Singh Sethi, Executive Chairman, State Legal Services Authority, U.T. Chandigarh, a Special Lok Adalat was organized at the District Court Complex, Sector 43, Chandigarh by the State Legal Services Authority and the District Legal Services Authority, U.T. Chandigarh.

Seven benches headed by serving Judicial Officers were constituted to hear cases relating to Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) matters, matrimonial disputes and traffic challans. All cases were disposed of with the consent of the parties.

A total of 1,046 cases were settled during the Special Lok Adalat, with an overall settlement amount of ₹5,70,41,077.

H.S. Grewal, Learned District & Sessions Judge-cum-Chairman, District Legal Services Authority, U.T. Chandigarh, visited the Lok Adalat benches and emphasized that both parties should make sincere efforts to resolve disputes amicably. He observed that overlooking minor differences can help strengthen relationships and contribute to the well-being of children. Referring to one matrimonial case involving a couple seeking divorce after 28 years of marriage, whose children are settled abroad, he advised them to stay together and support each other in the absence of their children in India.

The Special Lok Adalat was conducted under the guidance of  Justice Harsimran Singh Sethi, Executive Chairman, State Legal Services Authority, U.T. Chandigarh. Rooted in Gandhian principles, Lok Adalats have emerged as an effective mechanism for providing speedy, affordable and amicable settlement of disputes while reducing the burden on courts.
