Chandigarh Police have busted an alleged conspiracy to help an undertrial prisoner escape from lawful custody, leading to the arrest of two police personnel and two civilians. A fresh case has also been registered against the undertrial prisoner, who was already lodged in Burail Model Jail in connection with other criminal cases.
According to the police, FIR No. 103 has been registered at Police Station Sector 17, Chandigarh, under Sections 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Sections 199, 261, 262 and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The case was registered on the complaint of DSP S.P.S. Sondhi, SDPO Central, Chandigarh.

The accused include Sub-Inspector Jagmehar Singh, ASI Surender Singh, Karan Vadhwa, and Kunal Vadhwa, both residents of House No. 1588, Sector 36, Chandigarh.
Police said SI Jagmehar Singh and ASI Surender Singh had been deputed from the Police Lines, Sector 26, to escort undertrial prisoner Vikram Vadhwa, an accused in the IDFC Bank fraud case, from Burail Model Jail to Government Multi-Speciality Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, for a medical examination.
However, after the medical check-up, instead of taking the undertrial prisoner back to Burail Jail, the escort team allegedly took him to Hotel City Heart, SCO No. 202-203-204, Sector 17, as part of a pre-planned conspiracy. Police alleged that Vikram Vadhwa and his two sons had conspired to facilitate his escape from lawful custody by offering undue favours to the escorting police personnel.
Acting on specific information, a police team led by DSP S.P.S. Sondhi conducted a raid at the hotel, where SI Jagmehar Singh, ASI Surender Singh, Vikram Vadhwa, Karan Vadhwa and Kunal Vadhwa were found together.
Following the raid, Vikram Vadhwa was taken back and lodged in Model Jail, Burail, as he remains in judicial custody in other cases. Police said he will be formally arrested in the present case after obtaining permission from the competent court.
All the accused have been arrested and lodged in the police lock-up. Police said the investigation is underway to ascertain the full extent of the alleged conspiracy and any additional involvement.
